Femina Hip's 20 years anniversary of Fema Clubs in Tanzania

Throughout the years, Femina Hip's Fema Clubs have created a platform for the Tanzanian youth to ask the question you have as a young person regarding sexual and reproductive health.

Habari za usiku!

It is a great pleasure for me to be here today. To celebrate 20 years of Fema Clubs and to celebrate all the remarkable milestones that have been achieved by our long-time partner, Femina Hip.

Our celebration of Fema Clubs is not only a celebration of Femina Hip, but also of the achievements of the young people of Tanzania. We all know that being young is often fun and full of hope, yet it also comes with challenges and questions that need answers, motivation, and guidance. We know, since we have all been there.

Today, I will be talking about how Femina Hip has been a responder to such requests from young people all over Tanzania.

Through the self-organized Fema Clubs, millions of young people have been supported to access the much-needed information on sexual and reproductive health and rights. The clubs have created a safe space for discussing and sharing difficult dilemmas in their lives. The clubs have helped the youth gain confidence to learn and practice the life-skills needed to respond to the realities they live in.

The impact of what has been accomplished over the last twenty years, has been documented, and can be witnessed by what we have seen and heard today.

One of the things that strike me the most, when seeing and listening to the stories in the exhibition today, is a whole generation of youth that has been affected by the Fema Clubs. Some of the first students enrolled in the Fema clubs are now becoming parents, passing on what they once learned to their own children.

Furthermore, the creation of the Fema Club alumni is a very visible sign of the fact that Fema clubs are influencing and keep having a long-term influence on Tanzanians. Stories of change reveal that those who went through the Fema Clubs have continued to embrace and champion the Femina Hip values in their careers, families and societies and they are responsible citizen in their adulthood.

Our partnership with Femina Hip has spanned over many years; years of touching lives of the youth and nurturing the next generation of change makers in Tanzania.

Denmark feel honoured to have been part of this significant journey. Both sexual and reproductive health and rights for the youth and the global fight for gender equality, which is central to Femina Hip’s work in the Fema Clubs, has been a long-standing Danish core priority. And I must say that it has been our pleasure to support this initiative that empowers young girls and boys to navigate the encounters of adolescence, challenging as we know them.

Today, I would also like to congratulate all the Fema Club alumni, the current Fema Club members and their teacher mentors, in every district in Tanzania. Well done!

Your engagement in such vibrant youth clubs is key, not only for youth today, but also in creating a better future for all.

When celebrating the past, we also want to look into the future. I do hope that Fema Clubs will continue creating the safe space and uniting Tanzanian young people for the next 20 years as well.

We invite you here today to join the Fema movement and contribute towards equipping youth with skills that will enable them to fulfil their potential and impact the society they live in.

Asante Sana!
